Schizophrenia. A Disease Or A Label

Here we find a new article that this time I think is of great interest to all of us who are in this world of Mental Health< I have put this title first since it is with the target population of my current work and for more than 15 years. Under this heading I want to include what most of you will take into account and consider that a person with schizophrenia is aggressive and usually commits a large number of crimes; In some cases you will think that many of the people who have committed murder could be classified as crazy or schizophrenic.

In this PsicologíaOnline article, we will put on the table the topic of Schizophrenia. A disease or a label.

Development

I must make it clear that studies demonstrate the fact that the majority of murders or violent behavior in today’s society they are committed by so-called “normal” people< That in very few cases diagnoses of schizophrenia were associated. This has a very clear explanation: in most cases people with some type of psychiatric diagnosis are under the "control" of their family members and it is very difficult for them to get out of the circles that they set for them. But in the case of being able to get out of these, today there are some antipsychotic medications (neuroleptics) that have a disappearing effect on all types of symptoms, both positive and negative (so that we understand each other: delusions, hallucinations, negative behaviors..).

I have to comment that the effect of neuroleptics It would not be satisfactory in any way if it were not accompanied by the psychotherapies used in recent decades, see the work with delusions and hallucinations, psychoeducation work groups where work strategies are applied on all the symptoms in addition to knowledge of the side effects. of medication (among other tasks), the work of social skills is very important for the management of possible conflictive situations that may be found in their daily life, in addition to some specific ones for each population in their different personal avatars of daily life. focused on personalized individual intervention.

As a consequence of the above, people with a psychiatric diagnosis rarely have symptoms since they are controlled by the medication they take in addition to being under a continuous family supervision (which from my point of view is inappropriate) since, in most cases they fall into this stigmatizing process of their relatives.

Finally, I wanted to emphasize the damage that is done by many professional groups in which they stigmatize and psychiatrist people’s reality. This is the predominant medical model, which considers people sick and entails labeling that makes a person the size of Obelix carry a slab.

This label causes the person to wear a continuous self-fulfilling prophecy And let me explain: when he commits any type of behavior (whether violent, disruptive, inappropriate..) he says to himself – “of course he is schizophrenic, that’s why he commits this type of behavior, you know who is crazy..” – and it is possible to provide feedback on what society has labeled as disruptive, abnormal, disordered, etc.

What I have defined as labeling is normally what happens with most of the false beliefs present in today’s society. For example: gypsies usually pass drugs, Romanians are all thieves, the English are a society that drinks a lot of beer, the Chinese are all Buddhists, schizophrenics are violent people..

All these false beliefs, As they are present in many areas of society, they do not undergo a logical verification of what we evaluate and, if we see a schizophrenic or a gypsy, we already presuppose what society manifests without making a logical reasoning to say, is what they affirm in This person I know? We have a lot of tendency to maintain false beliefs and we are guided by what society imposes on us, that is, we are dependent on what our society dictates<
