Why Don’t We Keep Our New Year’s Resolutions?

Why we don't keep our New Year's resolutions

We tend to think that personal development is something that happens throughout our lives. However, neither personal development nor changes for the better in general work like that.

It is at certain moments in our lives where we get tired of a certain situation we are experiencing, we make an analysis decision, and we decide to live a process of change. Exactly: in life there is no constant change, but rather specific moments in which we experience a personal transformation. So… Why don’t we keep our New Year’s resolutions?

Personal development starting at the end of the year

New Year is usually an excuse to set goals and resolutions, which are actually closely related to the personal and real change that we want to achieve. However, those objectives or purposes are rarely met… While we find an ideal moment to commit ourselves and transform our daily lives, it is rarely achieved What prevents you? Where is the problem?

In the last 10 years I have accompanied people from up to 8 different countries as a psychologist and coach in their change processes through empowermenthumano.com. Although the change that each person needs to experience is different, there are a series of common factors that make change possible… and in turn, those factors disappear in the New Year as if by magic.

Below I am going to explain what are the 4 keys for you to really live your process of change and personal transformation and what are the 3 factors that are probably preventing you from living it in the New Year.

A change process is not just reflection and purpose No matter how much you read self-help books or listen to talks, it is just information that can move you or make you think, but not a change in itself. Change is only possible if you change, and that happens with different actions (they can be small everyday actions in your daily life, in relation to how you communicate or use your time, understand your emotions, relate, etc.).

There are 4 clear keys to achieving changes, purposes and objectives: commitment, perseverance, action plan and company.

    1. Commitment

One of the main problems when we set goals is that our only commitment is that… consider it and maybe try to take some steps, but not live the complete process You must commit to going to the end. Only 100% works for you.

    2. Consistency

A process of change involves small changes every day, not meeting 1 or 2 weekly goals The change is in you and it must happen in you.

    3. Action plan

Without action there is only thought, intention, will, not genuine change. An action plan with specific objectives that lead you to your personal change It will make you achieve more results, new experiences, more well-being and rewarding experiences than all the New Year’s resolutions you can imagine.

    4. Company

Above all, company is important, because We are social beings who need others to get out of their personal circle This is why it is important that you have professional and expert supervision in your change process. If you want me to accompany you, you can take a free first step with an exploratory session at empowermenthumano.com.

Why don’t you usually keep your New Year’s resolutions?

The previous keys in turn reflect the main factors why we do not achieve the famous New Year’s resolutions. Are these.

    1. They are not the right purposes

We choose them from desire but not from reality or our limits, and above all, They are not purposes that really imply a change Going to the gym or quitting smoking is great, but it’s not the real change. The real change is: what is stopping you? What has to change in you so that you live a life where health (without tobacco) or going to the gym or doing physical activity is something everyday and part of you?

    2. Lack of commitment

We set goals, but we do not have the commitment to live the process of change that leads us to achieve them.

    3. Lack of consistency and company

We set resolutions in moments of emotion, but then We do not know how to manage the moments in which, once again, laziness floods us and procrastination. With the company, the commitment and the necessary perseverance, that would not happen.

Now comes the time to stop setting New Year’s resolutions and set your goals on something more important and deeper: what is the personal change that you want to happen within you and transform your life and experiences? Tell me if you want.
